Beacom's setback takes a heavy toll on Erne's young guns

Monaghan 1-17 Fermanagh 2-7

By John Campbell

Fermanagh manager Phil O'Connor certainly had cause to rue the injury which abruptly terminated the involvement of his skipper and midfield dynamo Eoin Beacom in the ninth minute of this lively Ulster minor football championship tie at Clones.

The loss of Beacom paved the way for Monaghan to stamp their imprint in the engine-room particularly through the herculean efforts of Andrew Woods, who proved one of the architects of their victory.

If Monaghan engaged in rampant wastefulness in the opening quarter when they shot nine wides, then they more than atoned for this by sweeping into a 1-9 to 0-4 interval lead, Robert McAlister's well-taken goal being complemented by four points from the imperious Woods and a brace from the busy Aaron Mohan. Manager O'Connor turned to his bench for comfort after the break as Fermanagh desperately sought to make up the deficit and when substitute Callum Jones fired in a 42nd minute goal he looked to have lit the recovery torch.

Fermanagh, with full-back Ultan Kelm a towering figure and Lorcan McStravick a rich source of scores, certainly never relented in their overall efforts but Monaghan always appeared to have the edge on them.

With Sean Burns and the always dangerous Mohan engaged in a score-fest up front, the Ernesiders were once again thrust onto the back foot.

Fearghal McGovern, another impressive substitute, once again fanned the flame of hope by landing Fermanagh's second goal in the 48th minute but Conor Doyle joined Mohan in pilfering the points that took Monaghan over the line.
