Classy Corrigan's efforts are in vain

Monaghan 1-13 Fermanagh 0-15

By Pauric McGurn

Monaghan had just enough about themselves to secure an opening-day McKenna Cup victory over Fermanagh at St Tiernach's Park, Clones yesterday.

The game itself was delayed by over 10 minutes due to a large number of fans showing up late but it was Monaghan who took just two minutes to get going when David McAllister found the back of the net on his debut.

Soon after, Erne ace Tomas Corrigan and Michael Brannigan exchanged scores to leave the Oriel County leading by the opening goal.

The game was open ended with some fine scores with Corrigan's free taking impeccable throughout.

Eddie Courtney accounted for a fine Fermanagh score but it was Monaghan who were leading after 15 minutes thanks to Michael Brannigan, Darren Hughes and Thomas Kerr.

Paul McCusker kept Fermanagh in touch but Monaghan finished the first half the stronger and three in a row from Owen Coyle, Thomas Kerr and Kieran Hughes gave them a 1-8 to 0-8 lead at the interval.

The second half opened up with two Corrigan points from frees and it wasn't until the 12th minute of the second half when Hughes split the posts for Monaghan.

Corrigan responded for Fermanagh but two Kerr points put Monaghan 1-11 to 0-11 ahead with 15 minutes remaining.

Kieran Hughes walked for the home side after a second yellow card but it didn't stop the hugely impressive Corrigan, who hit 0-9 from frees over the 70 minutes in a stunning man of the match display.

Ciaran Corrigan and Daniel Teague pointed for the Ernesiders but Monaghan always had that little bit extra and finished off well with points from Kieran Hughes and Fintan Kelly.
