GPA talks with Cullen are deadlocked

Wednesday, 1 July 2009

The impasse over the exchequer funded inter-county GAA expense scheme remains in place after a meeting between GPA officials and Minister for Sport Martin Cullen.

Chief executive Dessie Farrell and chairman Donal Og Cusack met with Cullen on Monday night but the parties appear to be no further on in their quest to come to a new arrangement.

Cullen outlined plans as to how the scheme could continue under a new funding structure but this was not thought to be palatable to the GPA representatives.

The GPA declined to comment on how the talks went but there is still some confidence that some agreement can be brokered.

Minister Cullen is understood to favour a significantly compressed scheme that would relate almost entirely to the more successful teams.

"Talks have taken place between the Minister for Arts Sports and Tourism Martin Cullen T.D, his Department officials and the GPA concerning the status of Government Funding for inter-county players. The GPA is making no comment on the issue at this point," a GPA statement read.

The GPA may outline their position in relation to the expense scheme and to their ongoing issues with the GAA over official recognition later in the week when a press conference involving representatives from four of next week's provincial finalists in Munster and Leinster is being planned.

To do that they will require additional funding and have already broached the subject of a percentage of gate receipts and TV money with previous GAA President, Nickey Brennan, shortly before his term expired.

There has been no response to the GPA move last week by the GAA. Current director general, Paraic Duffy, is on holiday.

Top Kilkenny player, Henry Shefflin, said yesterday it's time the GPA was recognised officially as the players' body.

"It doesn't affect us at the moment. All the GPA are looking for is official recognition. The GPA is the players' body and they should be recognised by the GAA," he said.
