Hughes ensures Monaghan kick off campaign with win

Mayo 0-12 Monaghan 1-11

Monaghan started their Division One campaign with a first ever Allianz National Football League win on Mayo soil in Castlebar on Saturday evening.

A goal just after the restart by Darren Hughes was the defining score of a tough encounter where Monaghan defied a wides tally of 14 to finish on the right side of the result.

Monaghan raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead, with Conor McManus kicking four points, but Mayo hit five on the trot from the 24th minute on, with Cillian O'Connor, Kevin McLoughlin, Alan Freeman and Evan Regan all on target.

The beaten All-Ireland finalists changed ends ahead by 0-6 to 0-5, but Monaghan made a great start to the second half when McManus turned provider for Hughes to slide home what would prove to be the game's only goal.

Monaghan have a local derby against Cavan next Sunday, while Mayo travel to Tralee to face Kerry on Saturday.

Mayo scorers: C O'Connor 0-7 (5f); E Regan 0-2 (1f); A Freeman, K McLoughlin, F Boland 0-1 each.

Monaghan scorers: C McManus 0-6 (3f, 1 '45); D Hughes 1-1; C Walshe, G Doogan, T Kerr, R Beggan (f) 0-1 each.
