Injury forces Heavin to retire

Westmeath's Derek Heavin has been forced to give up the game due to injury.

The 31-year-old suffered a serious knee injury during the Leinster SFC semi-final against Louth in June.

He dislocated a knee and cartilage, and damaged cruciate, medial and lateral knee ligaments.

He was detained in hospital for 12 days as a result of the injury, and has subsequently undergone three operations.

Heavin was a member of the Westmeath team which won the Leinster title in 2004, and also won an All-Ireland U21 medal in 1999.
