It’s not all good news at GAA towers

These are indeed turbulent days in the GAA.

The financial markets may be volatile but the country’s largest sporting organisation can almost match the mayhem on the global economic front.

The fall-out from the Donegal football team management appointment, the ongoing barbs in relation to the welfare of the inter-provincial championships and the fact that Ger Loughnane’s ousting as Galway hurling manager has now led to the possibility of former Ireland rugby coach Eddie O’Sullivan being approached in relation to help find a successor almost defy logic.

Indeed, Donegal defender Karl Lacey, one of the best players in the province has lashed out at his county board for their failure to take into account players’ feelings in relation to the appointment of Brian McIver’s succssor.

“It’s an absolute disgrace,” fumes Lacey.

And that’s the very word that long-time campaigner for the inter-pro series, Noel Walsh, has used in decrying comments attributed to GAA president Nickey Brennan in relation to the intseries.

“The president is not giving the inter-provincials the respect they deserve and I think this is a disgrace. The GAA is only paying lip-service to the inter-pros,” maintains Walsh.

Meanwhile, the possibility that Eddie O’Sullivan could be asked for his input into the search for a new Galway hurling manager is creating plenty of debate around the country.

O’Sullivan, who lives in Moylough, Co Galway may be approached by the three-man committee set up to find a replacement for Loughnane, who was sacked last week.

The committee comprising of hurling board secretary John Fahey, chairman Miko Ryan and county board chairman Gerry Larkin have the authority to add two more to the panel if needed.

And O’Sullivan’s name was mentioned at a recent county board meeting.

Clubs have been given until Friday next to submit nominations and the front runners for the post are Portumna’s Jimmy Heverin, Anthony Cunningham and Michael Bond.

It can be assumed that events in Galway will be followed with more than a passing interest now that O’Sullivan could have a role to play.

Blame for this awful mess lies squarely with Capello

Unusually for Fabio Capello, a man who owns some highly valued pieces of art but is not given to too many flights of poetic fancy, he once said that he had a dream. It was right at the start of his England reign and it was that he would lead his team into the final of the World Cup in Johannesburg.
