The GAA has confirmed that Seanie Johnston will not be eligible to play for Kildare in Sunday's Leinstrer SFC quarter-final against Offaly.

Johnston, who recently received approval for his controversial transfer from Cavan, made his debut for his new club, St Kevin's, at the weekend.

But he must play in a club championship game before he qualifies to play inter-county football for the Lilywhites.

Kildare officials had hoped a technicality linked to the date of his original transfer application might open the door to a Johnston debut at O'Moore Park this weekend, but that possibility has been ruled out.
