Kerry capped their first visit to Celtic Park with a comfortable ten-point win over a Derry side that played second fiddle for much of the first half.
Indeed they were fortunate to only trail 1-09 to 0-04 at the break as the visitors shot ten wides in this period, with the usually accurate Shane Brick recording his seventh wide of the half from a ‘65’ taken just before the short whistle.
The Kerry goal came ten minutes from half time, wonderful stickwork from Darragh O’Connell leading to a wonderful goal that illuminated an otherwise mediocre opening period.
Derry did start the second half much better and points from Paddy Henry either side of one from half time substitute Alan Grant gave Derry a flicker of hope.
After ten minutes of the restart Oisin McCloskey netted from a penalty, after Mickey Conway had been bundled over in front of goal and Derry were in with a shout at 1-10 to 1-07.
However, within two minutes Kerry restored their advantage with a Dooley goal, Derry’s lack of scoring punch ensuring a comfortable victory.
Nine minutes from time Kerry’s copybook was blotted when wing back Tom Murnane was sent off after a second yellow card.
However, just after Darragh |O’Connell blasted home his second goal, Derry full back Sean McCullagh was sent off in controversial fashion, the referee showing him a red card after a yellow card.
However McCullagh did not seem to have received a first yellow card, while the Kerry player involved in the incident escaped the red card that usually follows his clear-cut misdemeanour.
