Kilkenny denied by Tipperary
Tipperary's first All-Ireland hurling title since 2001 thwarted Kilkenny's bid for a fifth successive Liam McCarthy Cup triumph.
Lar Corbett smashed home the first of his three goals in the tenth minute, but despite the loss of Henry Shefflin through injury after 12 minutes, Kilkenny fought back. Richie Power's 33rd minute goal narrowed the gap to a point, Tipp turning around with a 1-10 to 1-9 lead.
Corbett and Noel McGrath added further goals early in the second half, and Power's 1-9 tally was not enough to make history for the Cats, who could do nothing to prevent Corbett from completing his hat-trick in stoppage time on the way to a 4-17 to 1-18 success.
