Lyons set for Mayo role

Published 25/09/2010

Tommy Lyons will be named at Mayo's new football manager next week following John Maughan's withdrawal from the race.

Former county players James Horan and Anthony McGarry are still in contention, but Lyons is a clear favourite to become John O'Mahony's successor.

Maughan, who had two previous spells as Mayo manager, during which he guided them to three All-Ireland final appearances, informed county board officials on Thursday night that he was pulling out of the contest.

"I was very interested in the job, but, following a discussion with the chairman of the county board, I decided not to pursue my interest in the position any further," he said.
