Mayo edge it against Tyrone

Tyrone 1-11 Mayo 1-12

Tyrone slumped to their second defeat of this season’s National Football League when Mayo had the minimum to spare in a fiercely contested battle at Healy Park, Omagh yesterday afternoon.

The visitors led by a point at the break but three unanswered scores on the restart appeared to put Tyrone in the ascendancy.

Mayo then hit half a dozen points in a row to give them a stranglehold on the game and while Tyrone came strongly at the finish they simply just came up short.

Already without suspended trio Conor Gormley, Justin McMahon and Martin Penrose the Ulster champions’ problems are mounting after yesterday with Joe McMahon picking up a straight red card at the end of the game.

Tyrone were given the boost of a goal at the end of the opening quarter when a well worked move saw Brian McGuigan square the ball for Eoin McCusker to palm to the net for a 1-2 to 0-2 lead.

Mayo though hit back with the superb Mark Ronaldson leading the attack and when he converted a 26th minute penalty it enabled them to lead 1-6 to 1-5 at the break.

Tyrone came out for the second half with all guns blazing and efforts from Tommy McGuigan, Aidan Cassidy and McCusker put them two ahead but they then failed to score for 23 minutes.

Mayo on the other hand had points from Tom Parsons, Andy Moran and Ronaldson who finished with an impressive 1-6 to his name.

Tyrone were in deep trouble but manager Mickey Harte made a few substitutions and two of those, Peter Harte and Colm McCullagh, narrowed the gap with frees.

The home side threw everything at the visitors in the closing stages but they failed to get a draw which their efforts deserved and their day was summed up with McMahon’s dismissal in injury time.
