McHugh is UUJ hero after late show denies his native Donegal

Donegal 4-13 UUJ 2-20

Donegal's Under-21s are flying the flag in the McKenna Cup and were as far out as 12-1 to beat UUJ - and it took a last-gasp Ryan McHugh goal to give the students a dramatic win.

Donegal All-Star McHugh popped up to defeat his native county men with an injury-time goal that denied Declan Bonner's young guns.

Donegal were rocked when UUJ broke for a third-minute goal, Daire Gallagher blasting past Danny Rodgers. But Donegal replied when Eoghan Ban Gallagher profited from hesitance by Ricky Johnston.

Donegal were showing promise and Bonner's boys had four goal chances in the first half.

UUJ reeled off a series of points and led by 1-7 to 1-4 after 22 minutes with Patrick McBrearty warming to the task.

Donegal came close to a second goal when Jamie Brennan hit the crossbar in the 18th minute. The second goal was well worth the wait as Micheál Carroll palmed to the net.

Gavin McBride had to settle for a point with a close-range chance but Donegal led by two, 2-8 to 1-9, at the short whistle.

The teams were level four times in the second half but, with Donegal down to 14 men after Tony McClenaghan was given a second yellow, McHugh struck.
