Monaghan claim Ladies title

Published 12/05/2012

Monaghan denied Cork a fifth successive Ladies Division One football championship title with a narrow 1-13 to 2-7 in the final at Parnell Park.

Monaghan led by 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval, but pushed on with a Cathriona McConnell goal.

Cork pulled back late goals through Nollaig Cleary and Valerie Mulcahy, but the Farney girls held on for their first title since 1999.

In the Division Two decider, Cora Staunton blitzed Galway with a 2-11 tally as Mayo romped to a 4-17 to 2-7 win.

Deirdre Brennan's early goal helped Galway go in level at the break, 1-5 to 0-8, but Mayo ran riot in the second half, with Trina McNicholas, Fiona McHale and Staunton (2) firing in goals.

Westmeath and Leitrim finished level at 2-8 to 1-11 and will have to replay to decide the destiny of the Division Three title.

Laura Walsh and Elaine Finn pushed Westmeath ahead early on with goals, but a Niamh Tighe goal had the sides level at the break on 2-3 to 1-6.

Leitrim eased ahead in the final stages, but late scores from Walsh and Fiona Claffey earned a draw for the Midlanders.
