McCarron heads Monaghan charge

Monaghan 2-17 Roscommon 1-13

Monaghan moved into a four-way tie at the top of the Allianz Football League Division One with a comfortable win over Roscommon in Inniskeen yesterday.

Monaghan led by 0-12 to 0-8 at the end of an entertaining first half, before goals by Owen Duffy and Jack McCarron sealed a return to winning ways.

McCarron top-scored with 1-7 as he continued his impressive form alongside Conor McManus in the Monaghan attack. Roscommon battled gamely throughout, but their losing run continued and a return to Division Two now looks increasingly likely for Kevin McStay's side.

McCarron (0-6) and McManus (0-3) were in prolific form in the first half as Monaghan held off a Ciaran Murtagh-led Roscommon rally to lead by four points at the interval.

McCarron's goal on 51 minutes all but ended the game as a contest and they led by double scores (2-16 to 0-11) when Duffy palmed to the net.

Tadhg O'Rourke hit a consolation goal late on for Roscommon, who need to rip up the form book at Croke Park next Saturday to retain any chance of escaping relegation.
