Murtagh shows his class for Westmeath

Westmeath 2-12 Carlow 0-12

Ace marksman Brendan Murtagh sparked Westmeath to a well deserved Division 2 hurling title at Limerick yesterday.

Murtagh scored seven of his sides points, including three from frees, as his side added this trophy to the Christy Ring Cup which they won last August.

Westmeath got off to a flying start and led by 0-6 to 0-1 at one stage, but Carlow improved greatly in the second quarter and managed to draw level.

Then came the opening goal of the game, two Carlow defenders seemed to get mixed up in their calls as John Shaw raced through to hit a cracker past Mark Ryan.

A point by Paddy Dowdall left Westmeath in front by 1-8 to 0-6 at the interval.

A goal in the first minute of the second half by Derek McNicholas put the issue beyond doubt.
