NHL Division 1 semi-finals: At a packed, sun-splashed Nowlan Park, Kilkenny yesterday, there wasn't a mention of 'parking the bus', 'blanket defence' or 'a good foul', phrases that have besmirched the Allianz Football League to date.

Instead, the enthralled audience were treated to two spectacular hurling league semi-finals that not so much put football in the shade as sent it hurtling onto its own petard.

Pat Horgan's 0-17 for Cork highlighted their stunning 1-27 to 2-23 victory over gallant Dublin.

Goals from Mark Schutte and David O'Callaghan had sent the Dubs spinning into a 2-15 to 0-12 lead at the break but Horgan's sublime accuracy from frees and play was from another planet as Cork almost miraculously got their noses in front at the end.

And there was even better to come when Waterford just edged out Tipperary by 1-19 to 2-15 in a majestic second semi-final. Pauric Mahony hit 0-13 for the winners in an irrepressible display of finishing, holding his nerve in the tension-laden closing moments.
