Penrose pulls strings for rampant Tyrone

Monday, 13 February 2012

Tyrone 2-15 Derry 0-9: Derry took a hammering in a one-sided Ulster derby as in-form Tyrone marched to a second successive win.

The Oak Leafers are still seeking for their first points and look set for a relegation battle unless they can turn it around in their next game against a Monaghan side on a bounce following their impressive win over Kildare.

Mickey Murphy and Peter Harte scored the goals, but this Tyrone win was even more comprehensive than the 12-point margin might suggest. Derry were off the pace all over the park -- powerless to prevent the home side from controlling every sector.

Tyrone crafted a resounding success from their dominance at midfield through Murphy, who also bagged 1-2, and Aidan Cassidy, with Martin Penrose also a valuable source of possession.

Derry made the early running, claiming points through Mark Lynch and Charlie Kielt, but they managed just one more score in the 35 minutes which followed. The Red Hands started slowly, but once they got a foothold in midfield through Cassidy and Murphy, they were able to control the contest.

Penrose, winning loose ball and turning over possession, was key to the home side's dominance of possession, while centre-back Harte pushed forward at every opportunity.

Owen Mulligan and Murphy hit the target to bring the sides level by the 12th minute, before Penrose gave Tyrone the lead.

And in the 26th minute, a sweeping move involving Harte and Cassidy ended with Penrose crossing for Murphy to punch to the net. An O'Neill special capped an impressive first half for Mickey Harte's side, who took a 1-7 to 0-3 lead into the break.

Mark Donnelly and Mattie Donnelly steered over spectacular points after the restart, and Conor Clarke, Dermot Carlin and Cathal McCarron suffocated a Derry attack that managed just one point in the third quarter.

And John Brennan's men suffered a double blow in the 51st minute when Patsy Bradley picked up a second booking after conceding a penalty, which Harte drilled to the net.

Tyrone allowed the tempo to slip in the closing stages, during which Derry pulled back scores through Paddy Bradley, Kielt and PJ McCloskey.
