Quigg's the hero after Kilrea hold off a last-gasp Carrickmore revival in thriller

Kilrea 1-11 Carrickmore 2-7

Two injury-time frees from Paddy Quigg saw Kilrea snatch victory in yesterday's Ulster Club Minor Football semi-final.

It didn't seem like such a dramatic finish would materialise at the St Paul's, Belfast venue as the Derry team led by six with five minutes left, but the Tyrone side plundered 2-1 before Quigg denied Ciaran McAleer's men.

Both sides finished with 14 after Kilrea goalkeeper, Aidan Gillen was issued a straight red and Carrickmore's Loughrann O Donnaghile given a second yellow for what appeared to be little more than handbags on 51 minutes.

Playing into a strong wind in the opening half, Kilrea went in ahead 0-4 to 0-3 at the break with Niall Johnston - who finished the game in goal - kicking two frees. Paddy Quigg and Martin Quinn also registered as Carrickmore relied on two Ciaran Daly points and another from Conor Loughran to stay in touch.

With the elements in their favour in the second half, Kilrea pushed on. Two minutes after the restart, Rory Maguire's dipping shot crashed back off the crossbar, but after Quigg pointed, they raised a green flag when Johnston gathered on the left and fed Quigg, who hit the roof of the net to make it 1-5 to 0-3.

Carrickmore stayed in touch and James McGurk left it 1-6 to 0-6 going into the final quarter. Quigg nudged Kilrea further ahead before the flare-up reduced both teams to 14.

At 1-9 to 0-6, Carrickmore grabbed a lifeline on 57 minutes with a Ciaran Daly penalty.

With the clock ticking towards 60, the gap was down to two after Daly fired over from range.

Daly won the ball and began a move that resulted in Conor Loughran being fed the ball before a gaping goal and the full-forward made no mistake, putting the Tyrone side in front.

Kilrea drew a free out on the right. It was not a straightforward chance, but Quigg stepped up and curled the ball between the posts to tie the game.

The Derry side won another free that Quigg converted to send his side into the final against Burren on New Year's Day.
