Scullion strikes to sink Scotstown

Ballinderry 2-08 Scotstown 2-07

Thanks to a display of determination, Ballinderry collected the Northern Bank Ulster Club MFC title in a tense finish to yesterday's final, at St Paul's Park in Belfast.

The Oak Leaf champions snatched the honours from Scotstown in a dramatic finish on a 2-8 to 2-7 scoreline with 'Man of the Match' Ryan Scullion firing over the winning point from a free-kick three minutes into injury time.

Scullion opened the scoring after 90 seconds and in the third minute, Fintan Bell rattled the Scotstown net after a tap down by his skipper Gavin McGeehan.

Bell immediately added a point before Scotstown got over the halfway line.

Aaron McCarey was the only Scotstown scorer in the first half after which Ballinderry led 1-4 to 0-3.

They were held to one point in the closing 22 minutes of the first period with Peter O'Hara dominating midfield.

Five minutes into the second half the game looked over. Bell knocked over a point and 60 seconds later Scullion hit a super solo goal to leave the winners 2-5 to 0-3 ahead.

Ballinderry's defence, with full-back Eamon Wilson solid as a rock, broke up some dangerous situations but it was Scotstown who ruled the roost for the most of the second half.

When Paul Sherlock snatched a goal on 41 minutes it was 2-5 to 1-5 and the game at fever pitch.

The teams traded points and Sean Gilheaney, in the Scotstown goals, brought off a super save from John Devlin while at the other end Eoin Anderson made a timely block on Dan Heaphey.

Then two minuses from time Sherlock toe-poked the ball home and right on time Hughes rifled over the equaliser, 2-7 apiece.

In one last effort, Ballinderry, with controlled passing, saw Tony Martin racing through from midfield and, when he was charged down, the cool Scullion, from 25 metres, slotted the winning point.
