Shields to miss early rounds

Published 04/01/2011

Cork's All-Star full-back Michael Shields is to miss the early rounds of the National Football League.

Shields is currently holidaying in South Africa with his Cork colleagues, but plans to extend his trip to do further travelling.

He will miss the league opener against Munster rivals Kerry on February 6, as well as the Croke Park clash with Dublin.

The Cork party are due to return on January 14, and in the meantime, a shadow side will field for Sunday's McGrath Cup opener against Waterford IT at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Alan O'Connor and Kevin McMahon, who did not travel to South Africa, are the only members of the All-Ireland winning squad available for this weekend's game.
