St Brigid's title dreams ended as Londoners find a bit extra

Robert Emmetts 0-16 St Brigid's, Cloughmill 0-14 (aet)

Geoffrey Laverty admits it's going to be a tough few days for his St Brigid's players after their All-Ireland dreams were crushed in extra-time in London.

The Ulster champions showed superb fight and fitness levels on a bog of a pitch in Greenford and looked set to be rewarded with an All-Ireland semi-final date with Carrickshock when they led by two points with three minutes remaining.

However, Robert Emmetts equalised in the second minute of added time and after both teams spurned chances to win it the Londoners hit three points in as many minutes at the end of extra-time to clinch victory.

"Emmetts are an excellent team and we wish them good luck in the semi-finals, but it's hard to take. We put a lot of work into this," said Cloughmills manager Laverty.

"The boys gave everything today. We've had plenty of good times this year and this is the other end of the scale."

Michael Devlin quickly found his range from frees but the Cloughmills club's physical approach presented Richie Murphy with the chance to reply from placed balls. The two players kept the scoreboard ticking over, Devlin finishing with nine points and Murphy with 0-12.

Emmetts' strength in depth proved the difference in extra-time. Murphy's 12th point put them three points to the good but Devlin was inches away from forcing a replay, his late free whizzing over the crossbar.
