Tyrone triumph over Meath marred by injury woe

Meath 1-11 Tyrone 1-17

By Kevin Kelly

Tyrone made it five wins out of five in Division Two when they had six points to spare over Meath at Pairc Tailteann, Navan.

It was another fine display from Mickey Harte's charges who recovered well from conceding an early goal. A trio of injuries, however, to Ronan McNamee, Ronan O'Neill and Conor Meyler cast a cloud over the win and in fact they had to finish the game with 13 men as they had used all of their substitutes.

O'Neill opened the scoring from a free but in the fourth minute Meath's Michael Newman finished explosively to the net. Tyrone wasted no time in responding with a wonderful O'Neill point before the same man finished to the net.

Newman and Richard Donnelly exchanged points before Padraic Harnan made it 1-4 apiece. Tyrone found another gear with captain Sean Cavanagh putting them ahead.

Mattie Donnelly then landed a great score before Niall Sludden got his name on the scoresheet.

Peter Harte converted a free before wing half back Johnny Monroe struck twice. Meath finished the half strongly with James McEntee and Cillian O'Sullivan providing points.

Newman narrowed the gap after the restart before O'Neill responded. Another brace of Newman frees trimmed the gap to two. Harte and Newman exchanged points from frees before Cavanagh left four between the sides. Donnelly then lofted over an eye catching point.

O'Neill had to go off injured but Tyrone kept pushing with substitute Hugh Pat McGeary hitting an inspirational score.

Substitute Kieran McGeary was then black carded which meant Tyrone were down to 13 but they closed the game out with Cavanagh's third point sealing 10 wins from 10 in 2016.
