Bangor's Garth McGimpsey holds the first round lead after an opening 70 at the Senior Amateur Open at Walton Health.
McGimpsey, a former Walker Cup captain, set the pace at two under and he was one of only four of the 144-man field to break par.
And he did it despite bogeying both of his opening holes yesterday.
But he reached the turn in level par with a couple of birdies and an eagle three at the 510-yard 16th took him to the top of the leaderboard.
The cut will be made after today’s second round with the top 60 and ties going through to tomorrow’s final round.
Meanwhile Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy, runner-up in last month’s North of Ireland amateur Open, had a level par 72 at Barassie to go with his level 73 at Dundonald to comfortably qualify for the matchplay stages of the Boys Amateur Championship at Kilmarnock.
Also through is Moyola Park’s Chris Selfridge who followed up his 76 with a one under 71.
