Northern Irishman Darren Clarke is in a four-strong group just one stroke adrift of the second-round leaders at the Volvo Golf Champions event in Bahrain.
Clarke followed up his first-round 69 with a superb 65, which included eight birdies and one bogey, to move alongside Paul Casey, James Kingston and Scot Stephen Gallacher at 10 under par.
Miguel Angel Jimenez, who broke his putter into two pieces and had to use his lob-wedge on the closing greens, is joined at the top of the leaderboard by Ryder Cup team-mates Edoardo Molinari and Peter Hanson and also France's Raphael Jacquelin.
Padraig Harrington progressed to five under following a 69, but Peter Lawrie was unable to match his first-round effort and struggled to a 74.
Damien McGrane missed the cut after a level-par 72 left him at three over.
