Classy Annabel Wilson retains Irish title

By Robert Jones

Fourteen-year-old Lurgan Gold Club starlet Annabel Wilson braved and battled difficult weather conditions and made the course look easy as she retained her Irish Girls Close title at Galway Bay GC.

Annabel slotted in a succession of putts to sail through to the final with a 6&5 win over fellow international and good friend Julie McCarthy of Forrest Little GC.

Going straight into the deciding showdown against Lisa O'Shea of Shannon, Annabel did not hold back in the afternoon as she opened with a birdie and followed up with another on the sixth.

This, combined with steady pars, meant she made the turn four up and finished out the match on the 15th green, securing a 4&3 victory over Lisa.

In the Plate final, Lauren Walsh (Castlewarden) overcame Eleanor Metcalfe on the final hole.
