Delighted Rory boosts charity by £500,000

By Liam Kelly

Rory McIlroy's emotion-charged victory in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will not earn him a penny. McIlroy admitted he shed tears as he stood on the 18th fairway of the Palmer Ryder Cup course at The K Club knowing his super five-wood to set up an eagle three at the last had clinched victory.

McIlroy pledged his €666,660 first prize money (£520,000) to his charity, The Rory Foundation, which will also receive a percentage of ticket sales from the tournament.

"We've broken the million euro mark this week, which is absolutely incredible," he said.

"I don't usually get emotional about golf or about wins, but this one, it means just a little bit more, because it's not just for myself, it's for a lot of other people. It's a day I'll not forget for a while," an emotional McIlroy added.
