Irish Open 2015: Stars came but failed to make their mark

Soren Kjeldsen is a worthy new Irish Open champion, but perhaps not the man many would have tipped to win when the star-studded field for this year's tournament was finalised.

The biggest names didn't really come to the party and several departed early with the likes of Sergio Garcia joining Rory McIlroy in failing to make the weekend's play. But there were still plenty of recognisable figures battling against the wind in yesterday's final round at Royal County Down.

Former world number one Luke Donald showed glimpses of a return to form with his performance over the four days. He shot a closing 76 to finish in a share of 18th place on four over.

Players champion Rickie Fowler completed a two over 73 yesterday and ended up in a share of 30th place.

Four times major winner Ernie Els put together two solid opening rounds but fell away on Saturday with a 78. Yesterday he shot a one over 72 to take a share of 43rd.

Ryder Cup star Francesco Molinari finished up in 51st place with a one over 72 yesterday. The Italian's 79 on Saturday ended his chances.
