Leona Maguire fought back from the brink of elimination to make sure of her place in the knockout stages of the Ladies’ British Amateur Open at Royal Portrush yesterday.

With 64 players going through to the match play stages today, the 16-year-old was in joint 62nd overnight after a disappointing 78, but she fought back brilliantly with a second round four under par 70 to finish comfortably inside the qualifying positions in 18th place.

“I couldn’t hit the fairways on Tuesday and seemed to spend most of my time pitching out of the rough,” the Slieve Russell player said last night.

“I used a three wood off the tee quite a lot today but I was hitting the ball straighter.”

Leona set the tone for her round with four birdies on the front nine and made sure of qualification with a couple more on the way home.

Six Ulster players, led by Leona’s twin Lisa in 14th place, are through to this morning’s first knockout round.

Lisa followed her opening 75 with a two under par 72 for a 36-hole total of one under, making the most of the light winds.

Royal County Down’s Danielle McVeigh had a disappointing second round 76 to finish at level par in 23rd place overall.

Royal Portrush’s Stephanie Meadow also had a 76 yesterday to qualify in 32nd place at plus five. Fellow club member Charlene Reid had a 77 for 45th place while Bangor’s Victoria Bradshaw scraped in in 58th place at plus seven with a five over second round of 79.

Louise Coffey from Malone just missed out on a place in today’s matches despite improving by five shots on her first round with a 76, losing out on the countback.

Spanish champion Camilla Hedberg topped qualifying with a five under round of 69 for a total of eight under par.

First round leader Minjee Lee from Australia, six under overnight, struggled to a second round 80, but still made the cut while the round of the day was by Sweden’s Nathalie Mansson who had ten birdies in her seven under round of 67.
