Lurgan golfers make their Point in fine style

Lurgan pulled off the shock of the Senior Cup as they dumped reigning All Ireland champions Warrenpoint out of the competition at Co Armagh.

They were completely in control of their qualifying final, winning each of the first three matches to complete a |4-1 victory overall.

“It was a tremendous performance from the team against some illustrious players,” said non-playing captain Peter Simpson. “It was a brilliant day out with some terrific golf and was well supported by all the clubs involved.”

Knock go through to the Ulster finals along with Castlerock, Moyola Park, and Knock.

Lurgan beat Ardglass 4-1 to reach the final while Warrenpoint overcame Banbridge |3-2. Then in the final Paul McCabrey beat Paul Reavey at the first extra hole, David Sutton beat Irish international Paddy Gribben one up and Gary Clarke completed a six and four win over Ryan Gribben. Steven Kelly was one down to Jim Carvill while James Horan was two up on Colin Campbell when those matches were called in.

Castlerock qualified as the host club, beating Ballymena 4-1 in the semi-final and Cairndhu 4-1 in the final.

Knock also triumphed at home, beating Dunmurry 3-2 in the semi-final and Belvoir Park three and a half to one and a half in the final.

Moyola came through at Ballyliffin, beating Dunfanaghy 4-1 in the semi-final and Royal Portrush 3-2 with the final match going to the third extra hole.

The Ulster finals at Malone will be played on August 23.
