Maguire twins make Ryder Cup

Tuesday, 29 July 2008

Lisa and Leona Maguire have made it onto the European Junior Ryder Cup team.

And they did it in style, finishing first and second respectively at the European Young Masters.

The 13-year-old Ulster twins will now take on the Americans at the Club at Olde Stone, Kentucky, just a few days before the Ryder Cup itself at Valhalla in September.

The sisters have already played their part in Ryder Cup history, presenting the trophy to victorious European captain Ian Woosnam two years ago at the K Club.

Since then they have made their debuts on the Ladies European Tour at the age of 12 when they played last year’s Northern Ireland Ladies Open at Hilton Templepatrick.

Lisa’s three round aggregate score of five under par 214 over the Golf de Chantilly in France saw her finish four strokes clear of her sister and Spain’s Anna Arrese, while Scotland’s Carly Booth took the fourth and final automatic qualifying spot on 219.

With the top four girls at the 2008 European Young Masters guaranteeing themselves a place in captain Gary Stangl’s 12-strong Team to face the USA, the Austrian handed his two captain’s picks to Kelly Tidy of England and Denmark’s Daisy Nielsen.

Tidy finished in fifth place at Chantilly to merit her captain’s pick.

Nielsen did not play at the European Young Masters because of her participation at the Evian Junior Masters, but her second place finish there, as well as her status as the number one qualifier at the European Girls Team Championships, convinced Stangl that she was worthy of a place in the Team.

The French duo of Stanislas Gautier and Julien Brun led the boys Qualifying Tournament with respective scores of 211 and 213, and were joined in the automatic qualifying spots by Germany’s Moritz Lampert and Spain’s Adrian Otaegui.

Fifth placed Englishman Chris Lloyd earned the first of captain Stangl’s picks, with the final place in the Team being awarded to Italy’s Matteo Manassero.
