McIlroy finishes fifth in Dubai
Sunday, 12 February 2012
The 22-year-old US Open champion resumed only two behind, but three-putted the first and gave himself too much to do after going in the water and double-bogeying the ninth as he finished with a 71 and a total of 14-under-par - four strokes behind winner Rafael Cabrera-Bello.
McIlroy tied with Scotland's Scott Jamieson, South African George Coetzee and Dane Soren Kjeldsen.
Cabrera-Bello pulled off a great shock to win as the 27-year-old Canary Islander's four-under-par 68 gave him a one-stroke victory over England's Lee Westwood and Scot Stephen Gallacher.
McIlroy said: "I'm a little disappointed considering the position I was in going into the weekend, but I can't be that disappointed.
"I'm pleased with how I hit the ball today and that's very positive to take into the next few weeks."
