Move over Rory McIlroy, Northern Ireland has a new world golf champion.

Tom McKibbin from Newtownabbey shot impressive rounds of 69-75-73 to win the Under-12 World Junior Championships by a stroke yesterday at Pinehurst, North Carolina.

The 12-year-old took to Twitter to convey his excitement, writing 'I did it! I'm the world champion!'

McKibbin's victory comes just over a month after finishing eighth in the prestigious Press Thornton Future Masters Golf Tournament, held at Dothan Country Club, Alabama.

And the Belfast Royal Academy pupil has already caught the attention of Northern Ireland major championship winners Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy.

McDowell recently gave the young star access-all-areas passes to both The Open and the Irish Open while last year he smashed the course record at McIlroy's former home in Moneyreagh.
