Gutted to miss out: Rory McIlroy

Rory McIlroy's year at the majors ended in bitter disappointment when he missed the cut at the US PGA Championship.

The Holywood star had a horrible bogey on the par five 18th hole to finish on three over par for the tournament and wreck his chances of playing at the weekend.

It means the Ulsterman will end 2016 without a major triumph, which will greatly frustrate the 27-year-old.

Always up against it after a poor first round 74 (+4), McIlroy could only hit a 69 yesterday at Baltusrol which wasn't good enough to make the cut. His countrymen Graeme McDowell (+9) and Darren Clarke (+5) are also going home early.

Americans Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb, who shot a stunning 63, are leading at the halfway stage on -9, two shots ahead of Argentine Emiliano Grillo and defending champion Jason Day.

Open Champion Henrik Stenson is six under with German Martin Kaymer and Patrick Reed from USA one shot further back.
