Paul Cutler and Alan Dunbar have both been named in the provisional 23-man squad for next year’s Walker Cup.
And the two Ulstermen are highly fancied to make the cut when the 10 players to take on the Americans at Royal Aberdeen are announced in August.
Dunbar, a team mate of US Open champion Graeme McDowell, won the Irish Amateur Open and North of Ireland Amateur Open this summer while Portstewart man Cutler won the Lytham Trophy and was a quarter-finalist at the British Amateur Championship.
Great Britain and Ireland captain Nigel Edwards, a team mate of Rory McIlroy at the 2007 match at Royal County Down, says that whoever makes the final cut, he will have a very strong team available to take on the Americans who have won the last three contests
“I have no doubt that every one of the 23 players we have selected could acquit themselves well in next year’s match,” he said.
“But it is up to them to show that they are ready for the challenge that the USA will present by performing with distinction and backing up their most recent performances during the season to come.”
Next year’s Walker Cup will be the 43rd contest and will be played on September 10 and 11 at Royal Aberdeen.
