Royal Portrush: All-Ulster tie pitches Selfridge in with Mulholland

By Peter Hutcheon

Defending champion Chris Selfridge will this morning take on surprise package David Mulholland from Castlerock in an all-Ulster semi-final in the Cathedral Eye Clinic North of Ireland Championship at Royal Portrush.

The Moyola Park player has mounted a staunch defence of his title this week and is certainly the man to beat at the moment.

He overcame Portmarnock's Darragh Coughlan three and two in his quarter-final yesterday afternoon, played with temperatures reaching 20 degrees on the north coast.

In his morning third round match he saw off the challenge of Balmoral's Matthew McClean by the same margin.

Nine Ulstermen had reached the last 16 stages, but only two remain going into the last four.

Mulholland is the other man after his victories over a disappointed Reeve Whitson, form Mourne, who had finished second in qualifying and had looked odds on to reach the last four.

He succumbed to his fellow Ulsterman two and one at the quarter-final stage having easily seen off Warrenpoint's William Hanna seven and six in the morning's third round.

Mulholland had a much tougher time of it against Galgorm Castle's Jordan Hood, prevailing only on the final green in their third round encounter.

There was third round disappointment also for Ballymena's Dermot McElroy, a former finalist, who went down to a one hole defeat to Stackstown's Richard Bridges in the third round.

Ardglass's Cormac Sharvin went down five and three to Robin Dawson from Faithlegg in his quarter-final after beating Tom Harris from Castletown one up in the third round.

Warrenpoint's Colm Campbell lost his quarter-final to Bridges at the first extra hole yesterday afternoon.

The match between Selfridge and Mulholland was scheduled for an 8.30am tee time this morning and the second semi-final between Dawson and Bridges 15 minutes later. The final is due to begin at approximately 2pm.
