Determined Europe Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke landed in the United States last night, insisting he had no intention of relinquishing his team's grip on the covetted trophy, not even to his great golfing pal, USA captain Davis Love III, who was there to greet him, ahead of their battle of wits and wills at Hazeltine, Minneapolis, beginning on Friday.

Clarke's look said, 'hands off our trophy' as he allowed the American skipper the briefest of touches.

And as they later faced the media together, Clarke predicted: "Whatever happens this week it will be another great chapter in the history of the Ryder Cup."
