Double major winner John Daly has shed an incredible eight stones following an operation to have a lap-band inserted in February.

At his heaviest Daly weighed over 20 stones and he is now urging the US government to make the operation widely available to help other overweight people.

As a result of the surgery Daly no longer drinks beer — he was banned from the US PGA Tour for six months last October after being found in an alcoholic coma outside a Hooters restaurant in North Carolina.

“Your self-esteem gets better,” he said. “I was teased pretty much when I was a young kid because I was so fat and it’s not fun.

“This is the greatest technology that anyone can have. It’s something I hope the government would look seriously at, especially for kids.”

Meanwhile, Daly says he doesn’t want to know any more detail about Tiger Woods’ personal life.

“I don’t really care what happened, I’m just glad he’s okay,” he said.

“We need him probably more than anybody else on the tour to keep things going the way the economy is.”
