Londoner Brian Davis endured the ultimate frustration at St Andrews, waiting in vain for someone to pull out of the Open Championship.
The US-based 35-year-old arrived back in Britain on Monday lunchtime as first reserve after failing to secure a qualifying place in the John Deere Classic in Illinois on Sunday evening.
It was the position Justin Rose occupied five years ago and he described it as “a terrible day. You are there from the crack of dawn and you feel like a spare part.”
