Hockey: Carrickfergus Ladies put their silver on show

By Ruth Gorman

Just in time for the new hockey season, residents and visitors to Carrickfergus are now able to enjoy an exhibition celebrating the growing success of Carrickfergus Ladies thanks to the local council.

A dedicated display cabinet has been made available in Carrickfergus Civic Centre, to enable the club to place their impressive collection of trophies on public display.

The eye catching display was officially opened by the Mayor of Carrickfergus, Alderman David Hilditch MLA, in conjunction with Carrick Ladies Hockey Club's Junior Ulster representative, Christine Waide.

"We're extremely grateful to Carrickfergus Borough Council for this opportunity to display our trophies and awards in our home town," said

"Over the past few years, Carrickfergus Ladies Hockey Club has been enjoying a very successful run of results.

"In that time we've accumulated quite a number of league title and league promotion awards. In only four seasons, our teams have won four league titles and six runners-up positions.

"We're obviously very proud of this and we're especially pleased that Carrick Council has shown itself so appreciative of our efforts. In each of the past three years the council has presented us with very attractive trophies in recognition of the achievements of our teams.

"We're delighted therefore to now have the opportunity to display these trophies and our league medals in the Civic Centre, for the enjoyment of residents and visitors alike.

"Carrickfergus receives a very large number of visitors every year who come to see our historic castle. The Civic Centre is also a popular attraction as it houses the town's Museum, Tourist Information Centre, and Community Archive, where our trophies are currently on view.

"So hopefully our display will be seen and admired by a lot of people. With a bit of luck we can maybe even add to our collection this season, but in the meantime we'd like to thank all of the councillors of Carrickfergus for their continuing support and interest in our club's activities."
