Cargo celebrates 150th cap with two-goal salvo in win over France

Ulsterman Chris Cargo couldn't have had a better way to celebrate his 150th international cap - scoring twice as Ireland beat France 3-1 yesterday in the Tri-Nations tournament taking place in southern Spain.

And fellow Ulsterman Jamie Wright had reason to be pleased too, with the young Banbridge striker scoring the Green Machine's other goal, his first in an international shirt.

France almost took an early lead at the Malaga venue only for Garvey's Jonathan Bell to take the penalty corner off the line.

But then Cargo scored his first after a great build-up from Neal Glassey and Matthew Nelson.

France levelled from a penalty corner but the Irish regained the lead when debutant Ben Walker collected Paul Gleghorne's aerial ball and set up Wright to score.

Nelson created Cargo's second, breaking clear and delivering a perfect reverse cross to secure the win.

The Irish complete the series against the strong Spanish squad at Benalmadena tomorrow (12pm).

Ireland: M Ingram, M Bell, J Bell, C Harte, P Gleghorne, N Glassey, S O'Donoghue, C Cargo, J Dale, E Magee, J McKee. Subs: M Nelson, J Wright, P Brown, L Cole, J Carr, B Walker, S O'Connor
