Frazer leads by example as Irish seal promotion
Ireland will be playing in the top-flight of European competition in 2017 after securing promotion from the second tier at the European Championship II tournament with a 4-0 semi-final win over Belarus in Prague yesterday.
A return to the top tier was the minimum requirement after Ireland were relegated for the first time two years ago and now the aim will be to beat the Czech Republic in tomorrow's final.
Ireland coach Graham Shaw said: "We're happy with the result and performance. We set a target of gaining promotion which is very important for us."
It was confirmed, however, that Shaw's team have slipped down a place to 15th in the world rankings after their poor finish to the World League 3 competition last month.
Yesterday, Naomi Carroll gave Ireland the lead with a tap-in after seven minutes.
Captain Megan Frazer made it 2-0 with a terrific backhand shot, Shirley McCay celebrated a record-equalling 208th cap with a rare goal and Ards striker Chloe Brown added number four with six minutes left.
