Ireland turn over a new leaf with Canada victory
Women's hockey: Ireland ended a five-game winless run with a 1-0 victory over Canada in Toronto with a late goal from Loreto’s Nicci Daly.
The result squared the series after Darren Smith’s side lost Saturday’s opener 2-1.
Both teams are using the four games as the final part of the build up to the World League 3 tournament in Valencia next month.
Ireland went into the Canada games after drawing twice with Italy in Belfast and then losing three times against the USA.
The Americans are ranked fifth in the world while Canada are 20th so Ireland would regard anything other than a series win as a disappointment as they prepare for the final phase of the 2016 Olympic qualifying process.
They forced the pace for most of the game without being able to translate their superiority into goals until the final quarter. The winner came with 10 minutes remaining to secure a morale-boosting win with two matches left in the series.
On Saturday Canada spoiled Ulster’s Lizzie Colvin’s 100th appearance in a green shirt, with two early goals before Aine Connery pulled one back.
