Mixed fortunes for Irish boys and girls

Published 18/07/2011

Ireland's Under-18 girls finished a very creditable fourth in the Eurohockey Youth Nations Cup tournament in Utrect yesterday after losing 4-1 to England.

But the boys were relegated to the second tier of European competition in the next such tournament in 2013 after a 3-2 defeat against their English counterparts left them in seventh place overall.

Ulster's Lucy McKee scored Ireland's consolation goal after England had moved 3-0 ahead before adding a fourth.

Cookstown HS pupil Ian Sloan put the boys into an early lead which they held until the break. England went 2-1 up but Sloan equalised before being shown a yellow card with three minutes left.

While he was off the pitch England grabbed the winner.
