Ulster Hockey's elder statesman, Des Simon, has reached the ripe old age of 100.

The former Ulster and Irish president received a telegram from Her Majesty the Queen on Monday and yesterday he celebrated reaching the century with family and friends at a function at Belfast Castle.

Des, who was named Personality of the Year at Ulster Hockey's presentation dinner in May, was an international umpire in his earlier days and also Ulster Branch secretary for 18 years.

He received a visit from the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church Frank Sellar and was also given a hamper from John Scott, the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey.
