There's no Blaze of glory as Giants beat champions
Friday, 23 March 2007
The Championship crown slipped slightly off the head of Coventry Blaze last night as they suffered defeat in their first match since claiming the title on Wednesday night.
The Belfast Giants spoiled their victory celebrations with a 4-1 win at the Odyssey Arena, with all four goals coming in the final period.
Blaze suffered a hangover - literally - after clinching the title with a 5-1 home win over Edinburgh and couldn't cope with a Giants team that clicked superbly in an eight minute spell to clock up a club record equalling eighth successive win.
It is the most league games that have been won in a row and with two more outings coming up on the final weekend of the season, coach Ed Courtenay would love to make it a perfect ten.
Courtenay was pleased with the win that maintains the momentum as the Play-offs approach, but he wasn't getting too carried away.
"It was a nothing game," said Courtenay.
"They were terrible. They probably had a few drinks last night and rightly so.
"We were where they are this time last year when we won the league and still had to play. It is difficult to play in those circumstance, but their goalie played very well."
The Giants gave up just 18 shots in the game, but fell behind to a Barrie Moore powerplay goal 15 minutes in.
Just when it looked like the game would played out like a friendly - there were only 12 minutes of penalties called in the game - the Giants moved into a totally unfriendly mood to claim what turned out to be an comfortable victory.
Captain George Awada came to the fore once again by slotting home the equaliser three minutes into the final period.
Just over a minute after that Jeff Hutchins gave the Giants the lead against his former club from close range at the second attempt.
Hutchins was gifted the opportunity to double his own personally tally on the night when a lucky bounce of the puck off the glass broke his way.
After picking up the puck Hutchins drove into the net and fired the Giants third past impressive Blaze back-up goaltender Stephen Forde.
Hutchins then turned provider as along with Courtenay he set-up Jason Ruff for the fourth goal.
"We were better in the second and third period at doing what we have been doing for the last month or more," said Courtenay.
"I told the guys that after the first period and they stepped it up again to put in a good performance and get the win.
"I was getting concerned when it was 1-0 for quite a long time and we couldn't get a goal back.
"We've seen it before this season when we've had quite a few chances but couldn't score from them.
"We got the belief again that we could come back and in the end we scored the goals.
"The last thing we wanted was to lose this game and lose the momentum that we have built-up, especially when we had such a big crowd out.
"Now we will look to our Play-off games next weekend."
