Ed Courtenay expects a professional performance from the Giants tonight in Dundalk

Ed Courtenay last night insisted that his Belfast Giants team has plenty to play for when they bring the curtain down on the regular season tonight.

The final home league game against Basingstoke Bison is being played in Dundalk due to Mamma Mia taking over the Odyssey Arena for a three-week run.

The Giants are guaranteed to finish in fourth place after last weekend's back-to-back defeats in Sheffield and Newcastle.

Taking two points this evening is as important to Courtenay as they are to Basingstoke, who are fighting with the Edinburgh Capitals for the final Play-off berth and the dubious reward of a clash with league champions Coventry Blaze.

Bison are fresh from another two-legged battled with Blaze, having seen their 4-2 first-leg advantage wiped out as Coventry lifted the British Knockout Cup on Tuesday evening.

"It may not look like we have much to play for, but although the match is in Dundalk it is still a home match in front of our own fans and that should be incentive enough for us to go out and try to win the game," said Courtenay.

"Basingstoke obviously have a lot to play for in terms of making the Play-offs.

"We know we are there already and I want us to be going there on a winning note."

Courtenay has been tweaking with his line-up since regaining the Elite League title became an impossibility.

He wants to get his defensive combinations and his forward line set-ups exactly right before the vital Play-off games against the Newcastle Vipers come around next weekend and it looks like he has finished tinkering.

"I am happy now," said Courtenay.

"I know who is going to play where and with who and hopefully what I have planned works out in the Play-offs."

Back-up goaltender Adam Cree was given some ice time in Sheffield last Saturday night. Stevie Lyle will start between the pipes this evening, Cree, however, may be handed another appearance during the latter stages of the game.

Mark Dutiaume will be absent again through injury. He rested over the weekend and will not return to the ice until next week when the team's preparations for the Play-off quarter-final against the Newcastle Vipers begin.
