Belfast Giant Walser in the hunt for two awards... and play-off glory

By Stuart McKinley

Belfast Giants player-coach Derrick Walser is in the running for two end-of-season honours after the Elite League revealed the nominations for their annual awards.

And two of his players are also short-listed after playing a part in the Giants' run to second place in the Elite League and the Challenge Cup semi-finals, with the Play-off finals weekend to come.

Walser is up for Coach of the Year after leading the Giants on a run that saw them lose just eight of their last 34 league games, but seven points short of champions the Cardiff Devils.

The 38-year-old Canadian's performances on the ice have also earned him a nomination for Defenceman of the Year and to prove that age is no barrier his Giants colleague Jim Vandermeer - who turned 37 in February - is also on the three-man shortlist.

Forward Colin Shields is in contention to be named the Elite League's British Player of the Year.

An impressive tally of 26 goals and 23 assists in 52 league games have helped him to 18th place on the overall points scoring list.

The awards ceremony will take place in Nottingham on Sunday in between the bronze medal match and the Play-off final.

The Giants face the Sheffield Steelers in the semi-finals on Saturday at 5pm with Cardiff taking on the Dundee Stars in the other last-four game at 1pm.
