Belfast Giants head of hockey operations Steve Thornton and player-coach Derrick Walser are working on bringing in a new signing to solve the team's defensive crisis before this weekend's home double-header against the Sheffield Steelers.

Johan Ejdepalm has been missing for the last month and the Giants finished Saturday night's game against the Cardiff Devils with just four defencemen able to take to the ice.

Walser is desperate to avoid the same scenario against the Steelers.

"We have to find a way of getting a body here for next week because we cannot go to the weekend with four defencemen," said Walser.

"You want experienced defence who can actually play back there, who are used to playing under pressure. I don't want to put a forward back there."
