Belfast Giants defeat gives Doug plenty of work to do

Not happy: Giants coach Doug Christiansen wants a good startDOUG Christiansen spent the early hours of Sunday morning glued to a DVD as he searched for answers to why his Belfast Giants team misfired in their opening game of the season.

Saturday’s 3-2 defeat against Braehead Clan could have been much worse, but the fact that it was a Challenge Cup game means there is now plenty of time to recover.

And the Giants coach will now spend the next five days doing all he can to get the best out of his players before next weekend’s massive league opening double-header in Nottingham.

“I would have at least watched the video on Sunday because we are back on the ice on Monday, but I wanted to look at it while it was still fresh in my mind,” said Christiansen.

“Fifteen of the 23 shots that Braehead had in the game came as a direct result of mistakes that we made.

“They are correctable mistakes, like on their second powerplay goal when we just had the wrong cover on.

“We need to improve, thankfully it was a Challenge Cup only game and with four teams going through from our group we still have time to rectify our loss, but we need a very different performance next weekend,” he added.
