ICE HOCKEY: Former Belfast Giants coach Doug Christiansen has been sacked by the Sheffield Steelers.

The axe fell on Christiansen yesterday, less than 24 hours after a 5-3 defeat against the Steelers' bitter rivals Nottingham in the first leg of their Challenge Cup semi-final.

He will not now have the chance to turn the tie around in next week's second leg.

The defeat by Nottingham was Sheffield's fourth loss in their last five games, but immediately prior to that they had actually managed to win 10 out of 12.

The fact that the Steelers are a massive 21 points behind the top-of-the-table Giants in the Elite League is also part of the reason why they have decided to dispense with Christiansen's services.

He left the Giants at the end of last season following the play-off final defeat to Nottingham, after bringing the league title to Belfast in 2012.
